Research in Sports Medicine (RSM) – Vol. 26, 2018 – Sup 1
Editors: Dennis Caine and Aaron Provance
During the past two decades there has been an explosion in both the popularity and participation of youth in adventure and extreme sports (AES). AES, by definition, involve an element of increased risk and are usually performed in beautiful, exciting and remote locations or in extreme environments, where timely and experienced medical assistance is not always readily available. Engaging in these activities at a young age has important physical and health benefits, but also involves risk of injury.
Providing a state-of-the-art account of the nature, distribution and determinants of AES injury in children and adolescents, review articles in this unique issue describe the scope of the injury problem and associated risk factors, and evaluate the current research on sport-specific injury prevention strategies. Review articles focus on a range of popular youth AES including aquatic adventure sports, all-terrain vehicles, mountain biking, motocross, rock climbing, rodeo, skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding, and wilderness and extreme environments.
Sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, recreation managers, researchers, injury prevention specialists, the AES industry, and youth AES participants themselves will find this journal issue useful in identifying problem areas in which appropriate preventive measures can be developed and evaluated to reduce risk and severity of injuries. They will also want to use this special issue as a basis for decisions regarding future research related to the epidemiology of youth injury in AES.
